JTAG and UART on Ultra96

The Ultra96 makes a PS UART accessible on 3-pin header J6. Accessing this UART from your host requires a transceiver, typically of the USB-UART type. Just a few options that you have are:

The Ultra96 makes the ZU+ JTAG interface accessible on 7-pin header J2. Accessing JTAG from your host requires a USB-JTAG programming cable. A few options that you have here are:

Both the J6 and J2 headers are 2mm pitch, so not the standard 0.1" (2.54mm) that fit many standard jumper wires. For this reason, you may want to invest in some jumper cables that adapt between 2mm and 2.54mm. The 2mm side will fit J6 and J2. The 2.54mm side will fit the readily available JTAG and USB-UART pins or flyleads. Here are a couple links from Amazon for 2mm to 2.54mm jumper wires that we have tried:

Note that the Avnet Ultra96 USB-JTAG/UART pod will not require any jumper wires as it was designed specifically to fit Ultra96 and provide both JTAG and UART interfaces through a single microUSB port.

Connection information

If you have a JTAG-HS3, an Avnet ZEDboard Processor Debug Adapter kit and 2mm to .1" flying leads, you can use those until the adapter boards become available. It's not pretty, but it works.

Plug the HS3 into the connector where the PC4 cable would normally plug. I have not tested this using a DSTream connected to the larger connector. If anyone is interested, I can test that.

Pin connections as follows:
Ultra96 Adapter
1 VCC PMOD 6
2 GND PMOD 5
3 TCK PMOD 4
4 TMS PMOD 1
5 TDI PMOD 2
6 Reset JP1
7 TDO PMOD 3

Notes:
1. Pin 1 of the Ultra96 JTAG is on the LEFT when viewed looking directly at the connector with the power connector to the left.

2. The PMOD pins of the adapter board are the UPPER row of pins.

3. JP1 of the adapter board is the single pin on the top.

4. Be VERY careful not to reverse the VCC and GND connections as that will most likely destroy your Ultra96 and/or HS3.

Enjoy.

Hello DXS,

Hello DXS,

We are currently working on getting this part in stock in Europe. Here are your current options.

1. Order the POD from UK Premier Farnell. Please view https://uk.farnell.com/avnet/aes-acc-u96-jtag/usb-to-jtag-uart-pod/dp/29...

2. Order from Avnet America however you will need to pay for the internation shipping.

I would go with option 1 for now :)

Thanks for brining this to our attention.

Thank you very much!

Thank you very much!
The first solution indeed sounds quite good - did'nt know Farnell also distributes these Boards.
